Gold Moved and So Did the Math. When Resizing Beats Repair, and What the Rules Now Require in Writing
Metal prices, laser welding and revised federal disclosure rules have changed which jewelry repairs are worth paying for and what your ticket has to say.

The bench work has barely changed in a generation. What changed is the price of the metal going into it, the tool most shops now reach for first, and the language that has to appear on the ticket when a stone gets replaced. Together those three shifts have moved the line between a ring worth repairing and a ring worth melting, and they have moved it in a direction that surprises people who last had jewelry serviced ten years ago.
If you are standing at a counter with a worn band and a quote in your hand, the useful question is not whether the price is fair in the abstract. It is which of three or four different jobs you are actually buying, and whether the paperwork protects you if the piece comes back wrong.
The disclosure rules moved before the bench did
The Federal Trade Commission is the agency responsible for how jewelry is described to consumers, through its Jewelry Guides. Those guides were substantially revised in recent years, and the revision reached further into the repair shop than most people realize. The changes tightened how laboratory-grown material must be identified, addressed the vocabulary sellers may use for stones that are not mined, and clarified how alloys below traditional karat thresholds have to be described.
For a repair customer, that matters at one specific moment: when a stone is replaced. A shop that sets a lab-grown replacement into a ring that originally held a mined stone owes you a clear description of what it put in. A shop that solders a new shank onto a piece using a lower-karat alloy owes you an accurate account of the metal. Separately, federal stamping law has long required that a quality mark on a gold or silver article be accompanied by a registered trademark identifying who stands behind it, and it sets rules on how solder is counted in a karat claim. That is a decades-old statute, but it is enforced against modern shops doing modern work.
The practical instruction is short. Ask for the metal and the karat of any new material in writing on the take-in ticket, before the piece leaves your hands.
Three ways to change a ring size, and they are not interchangeable
Most people ask for "a resize" as though it were one operation. Shops price at least three.

Because a shank replacement is quoted largely on the weight of gold added, its price has followed the metal market up while cut-and-solder work has stayed comparatively flat. That gap is the single biggest reason a quote can feel wrong against a memory of what the same job cost before. It is also why a shop that quotes a shank replacement should be willing to tell you the approximate gram weight involved. Ask. A straight answer is normal and a refusal is informative.
Eternity bands, channel settings, pave shoulders and inscribed interiors all complicate the picture, sometimes to the point where a size change means rebuilding rather than adjusting. Getting that assessment before you pay a deposit is the difference between a routine week and a difficult conversation.
Laser welding changed what is repairable at all
Torch soldering needs heat across a wide area. That has always meant stones out, settings at risk, and certain materials off the table entirely. Laser welding puts a very small amount of heat in a very small place, and its spread through independent shops rather than just manufacturer workshops has quietly rewritten the list of jobs a local bench will accept.
Work that used to be declined and is now routine includes tightening prongs around heat-sensitive stones such as emeralds and opals without unsetting them, repairing eyeglass-thin filigree, joining titanium and stainless pieces, and building up a worn prong tip rather than replacing the whole head. Antique pieces with original enamel or closed-back settings benefit most, because the alternative was disassembly.
What laser work does not do is make a thin shank thick. It is a joining and building tool, not a replacement for metal that has worn away. If a shop offers a laser repair on a band you can flex between two fingers, you are buying time rather than a fix, and the honest version of that conversation names it as such.
The triage: what is worth fixing at current metal prices
A rough working order, from clearly worth doing to worth a longer think:
- Loose stones and worn prongs. Always worth immediate attention. The repair is modest and the alternative loss is not. Prong tips wear like tire tread and are visible under any shop's loupe.
- Broken chain and clasp work. Cheap relative to replacement, especially now that a replacement chain is priced against current gold.
- A shank worn to roughly half its original thickness. Replace it before it fails. A clean planned rebuild costs less than an emergency one that also involves resetting stones knocked loose when the ring collapsed.
- Rhodium replating on white gold. Cosmetic and recurring, typically every year or two on a ring worn daily. Worth doing when you are already paying for other work on the same piece.
- Chipped or abraded stones. The recut question turns on how much weight comes off and what the stone is. Rising prices for gold have not moved every stone category the same way, and for some lab-grown material replacement is now cheaper than recutting. Get both quotes.
The piece that fails this triage is usually low-karat, thin, machine-made and sentimental only in a general way. When the metal is worth more scrapped than the finished item is worth repaired, a good shop will say so and offer trade-in credit against something you will actually wear.
What your ticket should say before you let go of the piece
A jeweler holding your ring is a bailee, which means an obligation to return your property in the condition agreed. That obligation is much easier to enforce when the take-in document describes what arrived.
- Stone count, approximate sizes, and any existing chips or abrasions noted at intake
- Metal and karat of the piece, and of any material to be added
- Whether stones will be removed and reset, and by whom if the work is sent out
- Turnaround, and what happens if the estimate rises once the bench opens the piece up
- Whether the shop's insurance covers the item while it is in their care, and to what value
For anything scheduled on a homeowners policy or covered by a separate rider, tell your insurer about significant repairs and about any change in stated value. Appraisals written when gold sat at a much lower level understate replacement cost today, and a rider updated at the same time as a repair costs one conversation instead of two.
Take the quote, ask which of the three sizing methods it describes, ask for the gram weight if metal is being added, and ask for the replacement material to be named on paper. Three questions, asked at the counter, settle nearly every dispute that would otherwise happen later.
